That was perfect. I have nothing to say, there’s no comeback for that.

Things I miss about California:

Predictable weather, you can spot it weeks in advance.

Great driving roads, the Sierras are blanketed by them.

Sour dough bread, Panera bread only sells weak sourdough.

Mexican food, yeah, a state that is roughly 1/3rd Mexico has great mexican food. News at 11.

A car can have crap paint and not turn into a rust bucket overnight.

Tools don’t rust right away.

$1M for a storage shed to sleep in. At least that’s in the SF Bay Area, better elsewhere

Wildfires and smog checks that are actually difficult. At first I thought “Wow, car registration is so cheap!” then the personal property tax bill came in, and I said “Oh, that’s where it is.”

That pic reminds me of this graphic from an LA Times article on earthquakes and building design.

Just FYI, Ground story can collapse in an earthquake so watch out.

Traffic. Day and night. Everywhere.

I was back in OC visiting family last September and was actually thinking of moving back after having lived the last five years in the Midwest. Then I spent a grueling hour on the 405 to get back home from a short trip and decided that nope, no way I’m dealing with this shit again. Unless I was rich and had a driver, which is an odd thing to come from me, someone that loves to drive just for the hell of it with no destination in mind.

The last few years I lived in SoCal I couldn’t afford registration and insurance (being out if work for an extended period will force some compromises), so the vehicles remained stationary and I either walked or took public transit. Yeah, it sucked, but I was in good shape because of it. It also forced me to think about having a plan in place before going somewhere, and also about shopping locally. I’d still rather drive, however, preferably on open roads...

Things I don’t miss:

Leaving for a higher paying job, then getting a fine because I didn’t withhold enough California state income tax the first 6 months of the year, based on my new higher annual salary after I left.

2 years later getting another tax bill because they assumed I still lived there and had just been skipping paying my taxes.

Traffic.

$1M for a storage shed to sleep in.

Seriously; soul-crushing traffic. To get to and from my $1M storage shed.

But the weather and tacos were phenomenal.
